Integrative oncology is a patient-centered, evidence-informed field of cancer care that utilizes mind and body practices, natural products, and/or lifestyle modifications from different traditions alongside conventional cancer treatments. Integrative oncology aims to optimize health, quality of life, and clinical outcomes across the cancer care continuum and to empower people to prevent cancer and become active participants before, during, and beyond cancer treatment. ~Society for Integrative Oncology.
While precision medicine focuses on the biological aspects of cancer, holistic care recognizes that cancer treatment must also address the emotional, mental, and physical health of the patient. Cancer and its treatments often cause significant distress, leading to anxiety, depression, and physical fatigue. Holistic care, which includes practices like stress management, nutrition therapy, physical rehabilitation, and complementary therapies such as acupuncture or massage, aims to alleviate these symptoms and improve overall well-being.

Mind-body therapies, such as meditation, pilates, and mindfulness, are frequently used in holistic cancer care to reduce stress, improve emotional resilience, and enhance mental clarity. Nutrition also plays a vital role, as certain foods and supplements can help manage treatment side effects, improve immune function, and support overall health. For example, omega-3 fatty acids, antioxidants, and specific vitamins may help reduce inflammation and promote tissue healing. Additionally, physical therapy and rehabilitation programs help cancer patients recover strength, mobility, and independence, particularly after surgeries or prolonged treatments.
Holistic care also emphasizes the importance of the patient’s emotional health, with counseling and support groups offering patients a space to express their feelings and connect with others undergoing similar experiences. Addressing the psychological aspects of cancer treatment can significantly enhance a patient’s overall quality of life and potentially improve outcomes by reducing stress, which has been shown to negatively impact the immune system.
Integrating Precision Medicine and Holistic Care
Integrating precision medicine with holistic care offers a more comprehensive approach to cancer treatment, addressing both the disease and the person as a whole. By combining the targeted, scientifically-driven therapies of precision medicine with the patient-centered approach of holistic care, oncologists can create a treatment plan that maximizes therapeutic benefits while minimizing side effects and improving quality of life.
For example, a patient undergoing chemotherapy might benefit from the use of complementary therapies such as acupuncture or massage to manage pain, nausea, and fatigue. At the same time, the patient’s oncologist may use genomic testing to identify specific genetic mutations in the tumor, allowing for the selection of targeted therapies that could improve treatment outcomes. The patient may also be advised on nutrition to strengthen their immune system, enhance healing, and reduce inflammation. The integration of these strategies ensures that patients are not only receiving the most effective treatment for their cancer but are also supported in their physical, emotional, and psychological recovery.
Moreover, integrative oncology recognizes that cancer treatment is not just about the immediate battle against the disease but also about the long-term survivorship journey. After treatment, holistic care continues to play a critical role in helping patients maintain their health, prevent recurrence, and manage any long-term side effects. Ongoing physical therapy, psychological counseling, and nutritional guidance help patients navigate life after cancer, supporting their transition to a healthy and fulfilling life.
