Vitamin B3 for Skin Cancer Prevention

☀️You Should Know: A Vitamin B3 Breakthrough for Skin Cancer Prevention

A new study published in JAMA Dermatology is shining light on something remarkable — an over-the-counter supplement, nicotinamide (vitamin B3), may significantly reduce the risk of developing non‑melanoma skin cancer in people who’ve already had skin cancer.

🔬 What the Study Found

Researchers analyzed data from more than 34,000 veterans with a history of skin cancer. Those who took 500 mg of nicotinamide twice daily for at least one month after their initial diagnosis had:

54 % lower risk of developing another non-melanoma skin cancer

14 % overall reduction in future skin-cancer risk

The results were most significant in people who started the supplement soon after their first diagnosis.

🌿 Why It Works

Dermatologists believe nicotinamide supports the skin’s natural ability to repair UV damage and reduce inflammation— two of the biggest drivers of abnormal cell growth. Unlike its cousin niacin, nicotinamide doesn’t cause flushing or affect cholesterol; instead, it enhances cellular energy (ATP) and DNA repair mechanisms that protect skin cells after sun exposure.

This study reinforces a central idea in root-cause medicine: when you support the body’s repair systems, you strengthen its ability to heal and defend itself naturally.

⚠️What to Keep in Mind

  • This was a retrospective study — meaning it looked back at existing data, so other factors could influence results.

  • Participants were mostly older men, so we don’t yet know how this translates across populations.

  • Sunscreen and sun-safe habits still matter — nicotinamide isn’t a replacement, but a potential companion to traditional prevention.

  • The form matters: niacinamide = nicotinamide, not niacin. Only the “-amide” form has shown these protective effects.

✨ Bottom Line

Supporting your skin’s repair systems from the inside out might be one of the most powerful prevention strategies yet.

If you’ve had skin cancer or spend a lot of time in the sun, it’s worth talking with your practitioner about nicotinamide and whether it fits your personal prevention plan.
